Goldilocks’s Big Mistake

Classic fairy tales are a part of our first theme in reading. We use them to introduce concepts such as title of a story, characters, and sequence of events. You can see “the Bears” cluing Goldilocks’s in on her big mistake of ruining their things as she woke up from her nap.

We have an independent reading time most days that the kindergartners really look forward to. Today we added a collection of alphabet books to their reading choices.

I wanted to let readers of Mrs. Jordan’s Journal know that I am experiencing some unexpected difficulties with my blog. We updated technology in the district, and for some reason I am not able to do some of the functions on my blog at school. Thus, I’m posting it tonight from home. I’m looking into whether the problem can be solved or if I need to change to a different blog host. I will keep you “posted”.

Bringing the lesson outside

What is a letter? What do you use letters for? What is a number? What do we use numbers for? These were questions we answered and discussed today. Next came a SMART Board activity to sort letters and numbers. Then because it was a beautiful day, we headed outside with our chalk in hand. The kindergartners each drew two big circles and wrote letters they knew in one, and numbers they knew in the other. When we were finished they enjoyed drawing anything they liked, followed by some running time round and round each others circles and pictures!

Kindergartners enjoyed making school buses this afternoon after reading and singing “The Wheels on The Bus”. They were proud of their projects!

“My Vikings”

The kindergartners learned all about bus safety today from some of our bus drivers. Ask your child to tell you some bus rules and explain the “danger zone”

It was purple pride day today, as we were supporting a wellness program sponsored by the NFL and the United Way. Anyway… a group of kindergartners were having a rather heated discussion concerning whether the Vikings won or lost last night. One little girl, not liking the news of the Vikings loss said” well, my Vikings won!” You have to love kindergartners!

Curbside

Upstairs we went this morning, to smile for the photographer who took our school picture. The kindergartners thought it was oh so fun to be able to go up on the second floor of our school.

Outside we went both this morning and this afternoon for a “practice fire drill” and a “real fire drill”. Our brand new school fire alarms are nice and loud! Here is a photo of us relaxing curbside after our morning practice.

Making Peter Rabbit

Peter Rabbit’s problem with listening and following directions was a topic of conversation today. We read the classic tale by Beatrix Potter and applied it to following the rules at school. The kindergartners then each made their own Peter Rabbit.

Music and Computer were our specialist classes today. Below are photos of our music teacher, Mrs. Meyerson and our computer teacher, Mr. Ludwig.

Our First Day

The kindergartners had a terrific first day despite a rainy, blustery start. We weren’t able to go outside for recess because of the weather. Instead, we had inside recess and played with toys. When the sun came out this afternoon, so did we. The kindergartners enjoyed getting out all of their first day energy. They all agreed they were ready to come back for another day of kindergarten.
